Advanced sales for Sony Corp.’s PSP Go handheld increased this week amid high demand for the new Playstation 3 Slim hardware. On Thurs., the PSP Go held a 51 percent sales increase to rank at No. 184 in Amazon’s Video Games division.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has today confirmed that the Gran Turismo PSP Entertainment Pack will be heading to Europe, but also that the UK version will differ from that which our North American cousins will receive. The bundle is set to arrive in the US and Canada on October 20th, 2009, shortly after the launch of the PSP Go, and will include a PSP-3000 console and a copy of the game, a 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo and three vouchers for Downloadable Content (DLC). They praise the system’s portability and promise of instant access to games but question whether switching to the Go will be worthwhile for PSP-3000 owners. The Sony PSP was planned to be released without a UMD disc drive from “the very beginning” according to Naoya Matsui, head of Sony Computer Entertainment’s Product Planning. “We’d planned to release a PSP model without a UMD drive since the very beginning,” Matsui told GameBusiness.jp (translated by Develop). The Sony PSP Go - the UMD-less, slide-out revamp of the handheld console – is to get “non-gaming applications” Sony has officially confirmed.

Non-gaming applications for the device had already been rumoured, but speaking to CNet, Sony’s Al De Leon said: “A significant reduction in price of development tools [would] enable developers to be able to develop content for the PSP. It will be mostly games, but there’s certainly an opportunity to look at some non-gaming applications.” More on non-gaming app’s for the Sony PSP Go
